NOTES

  • Leave lambs with the ewe for a minimum of 1 day after birth, to obtain the benefits of colostrum-containing milk. Then, start feeding Wet Nurse™ 24-24-30 Lamb Milk Replacer in solution. Solution temperature should not be greater than 38ºC when fed. Feedings must be evenly spaced and frequency of feeding decreased gradually to avoid digestive upset. If lambs develop bloating and/or scours from overfeeding, maintain the amount of milk replacer solution being fed, but reduce the concentration of the solution by 25 to 50% for 1 to 2 days, depending on severity of scours. Provide electrolytes, if necessary.
  • Breed, size and general health condition of lambs may affect appetite and growth.

B. AUTOMATIC FREE CHOICE-FEEDING

  • If automatic nipple feeders are being used to group-feed lambs.
  • FEED SOLUTION AT A COOL TEMPERATURE (4ºC) TO LIMIT INTAKE AND PREVENT OVEREATING. Lambs will require assistance in adapting to nipples for 1 to 2 days.
  • In addition, starting at approximately 1 week of age, supply lambs with a palatable creep feed and continue feeding free-choice to weaning. Reduce milk replacer solution levels for 2-3 days before weaning. It is suggested that lambs be weaned at not less than 30 days of age or 12-15 kgs of body weight.
